Summer Safety Tips for California Drivers

Los Angeles DUI Lawyer Jon ArtzSummer has most people in good spirits and looking to have fun in the sun! But it’s also one of the most dangerous seasons of the year in terms of drinking and driving related arrests.

In fact, a higher volume of drivers in general, combined with a higher than average percentage of alcohol-impaired drivers, causes nearly twice the number of automotive deaths during summer months than during the rest of the year combined. (Stat source: BackTrack.com)

So with that in mind, here are some summer safety tips from Los Angeles DUI attorney Jon Artz.

  1. Heat + Alcohol = A Dangerous Combination

When you have alcohol and you’re in a place with a cool temperature, and it’s the evening time, you may feel a slightly heightened mood or what most refer to as a nice buzz for a couple of hours before going to sleep.

But when you have alcohol in the middle of the day outside by the pool or ocean when it’s warm, that buzz can quickly turn into a dangerous situation. You may misjudge your ability to operate a vehicle or even worse, you may experience serious health conditions like dehydration, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke in extreme cases.

  1. Boating Accidents and Boating DUIs

Most people don’t think of boats the same as operating a car, but it’s important that you do. Accidents and DUIs occur often in boats during the summer time. Make sure you have a designated sober captain who can steer the boat if you’re going to be enjoying beverages on the water this summer.

  1. Swimming Dangers

It’s not just children who are at risk of drowning in the summer. Many adults also find themselves in dangerous swimming situations when alcohol is involved. Make sure, if you’re drinking and in bodies of water, that you:

  • wear a life vest if you’re in deep water
  • don’t dive into any body of water from tall cliffs or edges
  • look out for your friends and family who are out in the water with you

Here are some tips to stay cool on the scorching hot days of summer:

  • Drink lots of water, but avoid very ice cold drinks as they might give stomach cramps.
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Wear light but protective clothing
  • When consuming alcohol, sip slowly
  • Utilize the shade when outdoors
  • Go out in the morning and evenings only on very hot days
  • Check on elderly neighbors on very hot days
  • Go to the movie theatre, indoor malls and museums on very hot days

Remember, summer is supposed to be fun! Use common sense and stay safe during the summer season.
