Sparks checkpoint nets 21 arrests, 11 for DUI

A DUI checkpoint Saturday night in Sparks netted 11 arrests for driving under the influence and a total of 91 citations handed out to motorists.

Law enforcement contacted 2,260 motorists at the checkpoint, which was set up in the area of Sparks and Baring Boulevards, Sparks Police Lt. Tom Miller said.

On top of the DUI arrests, police made 10 non-DUI arrests, including one for possession of marijuana, two for possession of drug paraphernalia, two for minor in possession of alcohol, one for obstructing an officer and four warrant arrests.

Officers also handed out 57 citations for for miscellaneous traffic violations, 28 for no seat belt, and six for child restraint violations. Officers also issued 17 warnings for other minor violations, Miller said.

Multiple agencies participated in the checkpoint including the Nevada Highway Patrol, the Reno Police Department, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department, the Washoe County School District Police Department, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Lyon County Sheriff’s office. The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety Joining Forces Program.
