Motorists who successfully pass through a DUI checkpoint in Salinas on Monday could be offered a free turkey, according to police.
In the spirit of the holiday season, the Safe Teens Empowerment Project in Salinas, which is part of the Sun Street Centers drug and alcohol recovery centers, and Salinas police are holding the eighth annual Turkey DUI Checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city of Salinas.
The checkpoint will take place during the evening, just a few days before Thanksgiving.
The giveaway is not only designed to reduce the amount of drinking and driving associated with holiday celebrations, but will also provide a holiday meal for those in need.
The number of turkeys
is limited, so police are asking drivers not go through the checkpoint repeatedly to try to get one or more turkeys.
The turkeys were donated by businesses, private individuals, and members of the Police Department.
