Man charged with DUI after cops stop car at 5 mph

A Little Village man apparently was so drunk from celebrating his recent divorce, he fell asleep at the wheel and was coasting at 5 mph when police stopped his car by hand, officials said.

Police were called early Wednesday morning to the intersection of Cermak Road and Marshall Boulevard as a motorist followed the red 2000 Oldsmoble Alero and notified police about the slow-moving sedan, police said.

Officers spotted the car inching along the center of the street and were able to reach it on foot and stop the car by hand, police said.

Officers tried to speak to the man, but saw that his head was cocked back and his eyes were shut.

After stopping the car, they woke up the man and noticed he was intoxicated, police said. The driver, Raul Vega Jr., 34, told the officers he had been celebrating his recent divorce.

Vega, of the 2500 block of West 24th Street, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving under the influence, driving without a seatbelt, driving left of the center of the road and driving too slow for conditions, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.
