Three San Jose police officers were injured early Friday morning when an alleged drunk driver bowled his car into the back of a patrol car at the scene of a downtown shooting.

Jose Luis Velez-Pillado, 30, of San Jose, has been booked on a charge of felony DUI with injury and driving on a suspended license, police said.

Just before midnight, the officers — who were not identified — were at East Santa Clara Street east of 17th Street investigating a shooting.

Two unknown men approached a third male and fired several rounds, striking the victim at least twice. The victim, who was not identified, was expected to survive, according to police.

About an hour after the shooting, Velez-Pillado was traveling eastbound on East Santa Clara Street when he plowed into the back of patrol vehicle parked along the curb. The patrol car struck two more patrol cars and one of them barreled into a sergeant and an officer standing nearby, police said.

Both the sergeant and officer received minor injuries. A third officer who was seated in one of the patrol cars suffered whiplash.

All three officers were transported to the hospital. They were treated and released later that night.

The suspect, who showed signs of intoxication, was also treated at a hospital for cuts to his arms and a head injury and released to jail.

An investigation showed that the suspect, police said, was also under the influence of drugs.
