Is Your Body a Brewery? Auto-Brewery Syndrome

Recently, a judge in New York dismissed a DUI charge against a 35 year old woman who claimed that her body works like a brewery. The woman reportedly spent approximately $7,000 working with a specialist to prove that her body uses excess intestinal yeast to turn carbohydrate rich foods into alcohol. The syndrome can sometimes result in breathalyzer readouts that indicate a life threatening level of intoxication without the intake of any alcohol at all. In fact, at the time of her arrest, the woman’s blood alcohol content was an astounding .33 percent.

What is Auto-Brewery Syndrome?

What is Auto-Brewery Syndrome

According to Dr. Anup Kanodia of Ohio, approximately 50 to 100 individuals have been diagnosed with Auto-Brewery Syndrome, but it is likely that more than 95 percent of sufferers are not aware that they have the disorder. He states that in his opinion it is likely not safe for sufferers to operate a motor vehicle during an auto brewery syndrome flare up. While the condition has only recently been discovered and doctors are still trying to understand it, symptoms often appear after consuming foods that have a high carbohydrate content and can include:

  • Feelings of drunkeness
  • Glassy or bloodshot eyes
  • Slurred speech
  • Impaired motor skills

Individuals should remember that it is essential to always be safe while operating motor vehicles on America’s roadways. If you notice symptoms of the disorder or simply begin to feel funny while driving, always pull over and call a friend or arrange for other transportation for your own safety and the safety of others who are sharing the road.
