HAYWARD — Police are seeking gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI charges against the man believed to be behind the wheel of a Land Cruiser that was involved in a fatal collision Saturday night.
Juan Nunez, 43, also is facing two counts of hit-and-run. Police said that his listed residence is Alameda but that he may have been living in the Hayward area.
Dennis Splan, 38, of Hayward, was in the passenger seat of a Toyota Tundra that was driving along Hesperian Boulevard near Arf Avenue when it was struck by the speeding Land Cruiser around 7:45 p.m.
Both vehicles went out of control, with the Toyota hitting a light pole and the Land Cruiser striking a tree. Both drivers and Splan were taken to a hospital, where Splan died.
The Land Cruiser was involved in two hit-and-run accidents on Tennyson Road just minutes before the fatal crash, police said.
