Cocoa officer arrested for DUI

PALM BAY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) – An off-duty Cocoa Police Officer is facing charges of DUI following a mid-afternoon crash within the Palm Bay City limits Friday. Around 2:45 p.m. Friday a witness called police to report the driver of a black Nissan pointing a gun at another vehicle as it was traveling southbound on Babcock Street.

A few minutes later emergency dispatchers received additional 9-1-1 calls regarding a crash in the area of 2615 Ramsdale Rd. near the intersection of San Lane SE. The same black vehicle had crashed and rolled over.

Responding to the call officers arrived realized the driver was off-duty Cocoa police officer, Roney M. Daniel. The 31-year old officer wasn’t in a police vehicle at the time, he was driving his personal vehicle, but responding officers immediately detected the odor of alcohol and called a supervisor and DUI investigator to the scene.

Daniel was arrested at the crash scene after patrol officers conducted a field sobriety investigation and determined he was under the influence.

Daniel was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries he sustained in the crash. A little later, Daniel was booked into the Brevard County Detention Center, where he bonded out for $1,000 Christmas morning at 4 a.m. The crash is still being investigated.
