Football fans planning to spend next Sunday, February 6, huddled around the big-screen TV devouring pizza, soaking up beer and shouting should start planning now for a sober, designated driver to get everyone else home safely from the party.

That’s the advice from Senior Deputy Jeff Farmer of the county Sheriff’s Dept., coordinator of Avoid the 12, the multi-jurisdictional crackdown on drunk drivers.

Avoid the 12 will run extra DUI patrols in Goleta, Lompoc, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.

“Watching QBs Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Aaron Rogers’ Green Bay Packers trying to flatten the other team in the Super Bowl will be a lot more fun if you don’t have to worry about driving drunk, getting arrested and even hurting or killing someone,” Farmer said.

Avoid the 12 will hit the roads again on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds it through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which advises motorists to dial 911 on their cell phones to report dangerous drivers.
